Why should I refer my patient to rehab?

Rehabilitation can improve a patient's outcome. Research indicates patients involved in rehabilitation do better than those who are not. This results in a shorter length of stay and higher quality of care.

Often a therapist can help motivate your patient to recover. Therapists can monitor progress and identify areas of concern. They provide valuable insight into the functional potential of your patient and can assist in determining the best approach to long-term management of specific problems. Consider rehab another treatment option to prescribe.

What is the educational background of a therapist?

Many occupational and physical therapy programs are rigorous, highly competitive undergraduate programs. Once admitted to a physical therapy (PT) or occupational therapy (OT) program, students master a basic understanding of human anatomy, physiology and neuroanatomy, much like a first year medical student.

PT also includes preparatory training in the physical sciences: biology, chemistry and physics. OT usually focuses on the social sciences of psychology, sociology and anthropology. Although these disciplines may have similar base educational components, they diverge with respect to theoretical treatment models. Both PT and OT have clinical internships required prior to graduation. Upon graduation, therapists must undergo board examination to be licensed to practice.

Practicing speech pathologists and audiologists are trained at the master's level. They are trained in communication and hearing sciences at the undergraduate level and concentrate their studies in graduate school to specialize in audiology or speech pathology.

Once students complete graduate studies, they pursue advanced education by completing a clinical fellowship year under the direction and guidance of a fully credentialed therapist. Upon completion, students must also sit for a board examination for a certificate of clinical competence.
